The city of Pittsfield is located in and holds the county seat for Berkshire County, MA. History of Pittsfield, Massachusetts
Pittsfield was originally home to various native tribes in the early 1700s. Many natives ended up moving westward after disease and war forced them from the area. The first attempt at establishing colonial settlements was in 1738 by Col. Jacob Wendell. This attempt failed due to raids and war, and it was not until years later that a small village began to take form. In 1753, the new community was incorporated as Pontoosuc Plantation. It was later reincorporated as the official Township of Pittsfield in 1761. Beginning in 1807, the area began producing wool and quickly became the top wool manufacturer in the nation. The wool industry remained at the center of Pittsfield’s economy for close to 100 years. In the later years of the 20th century, Pittsfield was forced to restructure to combat a decline in its economy. The city focused on cleaning up the environment and invigorating the community with new businesses. This is what led to Pittsfield becoming the cultural hub it is today.
