History of Great Barrington, Massachusetts
Before it was settled by Europeans, much of what we know as New England was inhabited by the Mohican (or Mahican) tribes. In 1676, Major John Talcott and his men forced the tribes westward, beyond the Housatonic River, and claimed the area that would later become Great Barrington. A large expanse of land that would eventually become multiple different towns within Berkshire County was bought by Captain John Ashley in 1724. The town of Great Barrington was officially incorporated in 1761. In 1836, the Housatonic Railroad was chartered which led to Great Barrington becoming a popular resort town. Many wealthy families were also drawn to the town at this time and some of the grand estates constructed for those families still stand today. With its rich history and beautiful surroundings, Great Barrington remains a lovely town for residents and visitors alike.
